ABOUT THE JACK RUSSELL TERRIER

The JRT is a truly wonderful and exquisite breed !! They can provide your family with undconditional love and hours of silly side spliting antics. HOWEVER, they are first and foremost hunters making them not compatible for all lifestyles. The Jack Russell Terrier requires a lot of exercise and time to feed the natural hunting instincts that they have been bred for. They MUST have a secure yard. They tend to chase anything that runs (or flies) and should be well looked after, as their fearless temperament will prevent them from backing down from much larger dogs and also wild animals, such as racoons, fox, badgers and even coyotes. This is not a wimpy breed of dog! A Jack Russell is destined to be on a leash the majority of the time in public. This is not the type of breed that you can just let out the front door and think he will be sitting there 20 minutes later. Chances are, he will have found something to chase and be in a hole after quarry, or a mile down the road chasing the neighbors cat!! They need a "job" that keeps them busy or they will find "something" that does. A lot of times  bordem will lead to distruction of your things. They are easily excited, primarily due to their energy level. JRTs are very intelligent dogs, quick learners. They MUST have a good since of firm obedience from their owners!! They are like having toddlers, if you let them run amuk, you'll have a hard time later in their adulthood correcting behavioral problems. As a JRT owner you must keep the ALPHA position in your pack from the get go! They are sweet and cute as puppies, just as children are cute and sweet as babies and you have to start disciplining them from a very young age too. The Jack Russell is a very loyal companion and tend to bounce back quickly to their charming self after being scolded. They love people and like humans, crave affection and appreciation. They enjoy hours of ball fetching, rough housing and tug-o-war.
PLEASE, do yourself a favor and before you decide to buy a JRT, do your homework!!! Take the profile on the home page at the JRTCA site. You can find alot of good books about them at your local bookstores and online. The JRTCA is a great source of information as well.

NEVER buy from a broker, pet store or puppymill and be VERY leary of people that "creat" their own breeds and registries for them. Find a good reputable breeder (not just a registered breeder) that will let you come to the kennel, see & meet the parents of your puppy. It's important that you make the time to meet the puppies to insure that you pick the right one for you & your family. For more information go the the JRTCA site.  PLEASE check out Jack Russell Rescue in your area. www.soonerstaterussellrescue.savei.net
